Solar energy is becoming increasingly popular as a renewable energy source. While traditional solar panels are often installed on top of an existing roof, we are seeing an emerging trend where solar panels serve directly as roofing materials. But how exactly does that work? In this blog, we dive into the world of solar panels as roofing, look at the pros and cons as well as provide tips for those considering implementing this innovative solution.

Solar panels as roofing

Solar panels are no longer just flat structures that you simply install on top of your roof. In fact, today there are innovative products available that act as both roofing and solar power generators. These so-called “integrated solar panels” are specifically designed to replace traditional roof shingles or tiles. They offer a sleek design and are often less noticeable than traditional panels because they are subtly incorporated into the roof. In addition, they are a good solution if, for example, you fear bird nests under solar panels.

How does using solar panels as roofing materials work?

When you choose solar panels as roofing, you choose panels that are placed directly on the roof structure. So there is no intermediate roofing involved. The panels are designed to be waterproof while capturing solar energy and converting it into power for your home. They have special seals and joints to ensure that no leaks occur. This is similar to regular roofing so it works just as well.

Solar panels as roofing on barn

You may install solar panels on the roof of your barn. In most cases, this does not require a permit. However, it is wise to check with your neighbors beforehand so that they are not surprised. During installation, make sure that the panels do not protrude above the roof and that the roof of your shed is sturdy enough to support the weight.

In addition, it’s smart to check your municipality’s zoning ordinance. Sometimes it contains specific rules about what you may and may not modify outbuildings, such as a shed or garage.

In practice, a permit is often not necessary, but it is always good to check this via the Environment Counter. There you can use a quick online check to see if your situation might require an environmental permit after all.

Can you install solar panels as roofing on a carport?

Solar panels on a carport offer a smart and sustainable total solution. Not only do they generate clean energy, they function as a full-fledged roofing material at the same time. Instead of traditional materials such as bitumen, which are less environmentally friendly, the panels provide a tight, watertight finish. This way you make optimal use of the available space and reduce your dependence on fossil energy. The result: a carport that contributes both aesthetically and functionally to lower CO₂ emissions and a more sustainable living environment.

Advantages and disadvantages of solar panels as roofing materials

Choosing solar panels as roofing can have both advantages and disadvantages. In fact, installing solar panels is always a good idea. Nevertheless, in your situation it may be better to opt for regular solar panels, for example. Therefore, we have listed for you the biggest advantages and disadvantages of solar panels as roofing. Then you can make an informed choice yourself.

Advantages

Aesthetic design: solar panels as roofing offer a sleeker and more integrated look than traditional solar panels.

Space-saving: because they are placed directly on the roof structure, they make optimal use of the available space.

Sustainability: by choosing solar panels as roofing, you are contributing to a more sustainable world by generating green energy.

Cost savings: in the long run, these panels can lead to savings on energy bills. In addition, you will save the cost of laying roof tiles.

Increasing home value: homes with integrated solar panels may have a higher market value.

Cons

Initial cost: the purchase and installation of integrated solar panels may be more expensive than traditional panels. However, in the end, it will still save costs compared to regular power supplies.

Complexity of installation: replacing the entire roof can be more complex than simply adding solar panels on an existing roof. In new homes, on the other hand, it will be easier because the roof tiles do not need to be installed first. Do you already have solar panels but want to integrate them into your roof structure? Then beware, as there are costs associated with removing and replacing solar panels.

Maintenance: potential repairs can be more complicated, since you are dealing with both the roof and the solar panel.

Still relatively new: The technology is still relatively new, which can lead to minor problems or limited knowledge among installers. Therefore, look for the right professionals to help you with this.

Limited choice: fewer brands and models may be available compared to traditional solar panels.

5 tips for installing solar panels as roofing materials

Choose experienced installers

Installing solar panels as roofing requires specific knowledge. Therefore, it is essential to choose an installer with experience in this specific technology so that you can be assured of properly grounded solar panels. Look for the right professionals in the field of solar energy to ensure that the installation goes well.

Consider orientation and inclination

Make sure the roof is optimally positioned relative to the sun. The slope angle and orientation can affect the efficiency of the solar panels. So look into this before deciding where to have the solar panels installed. Read all about it here.

Integrate with a home battery

Consider adding a home battery to store the generated energy and use it when the sun is not shining. This home battery does cost extra and you won’t get a subsidy for it (yet). Ultimately, however, it will save you money. After all, you will always have enough power for your own household or still be able to quickly go into the Jacuzzi – which is also solar-powered – regardless of the weather or time of day.

Keep in mind local regulations

Check with your local municipality to see if specific rules or permits are required to install solar panels as roofing. This is because this is not always allowed everywhere and sometimes there are certain rules or conditions attached to it. So read up carefully before you opt for it!

Think about the future

Technology is evolving rapidly. Therefore, it is wise to choose a system that can be upgraded or expanded in the future. Get information from professionals about the possibilities. In addition, make sure you maintain the solar panels properly so that they last as long as possible. Then you can continue to enjoy the benefits in the future.

So solar panels as roofing are an innovative solution that offers aesthetic and functional benefits. As long as you educate yourself and see what is possible for your own home, you will be just fine. Good luck!

Capping solar panels often raises questions. What exactly is it? Why do you sometimes deliberately choose a system that does not use the maximum peak power? And is energy loss due to capping acceptable? In this blog, you will read in detail what capping an inverter, or solar panels, entails. We also tell you why it can be wise and how to make the best choices for your system installation.

What is capping solar panels?

The term capping solar panels means limiting the peak power your inverter can deliver. Solar panels have a rated capacity, called the Watt peak (Wp), measured under ideal conditions of 1,000 W/m² of solar irradiation at 25°C. Those conditions rarely occur in the Netherlands, usually the actual efficiency is around 80% of Wp power.

An inverter that capped is actually under- or over-dimensioned relative to the panel power. Simply put, you are coupling more panel power than the inverter can handle. On sunny peak days, the output reaches the inverter’s limit and “tops off. At first glance, this seems like waste, but in practice it actually yields more over an entire year.

The terms capping solar panels and capping the inverter are often used interchangeably, but technically there is a difference. Capping the inverter involves deliberately choosing an inverter with a lower capacity than the peak power of the solar panels. As a result, the inverter does not process some of the power at sunny times. This results in the so-called capping of solar panels: the panels then deliver more, but this is not fully utilized. In fact, therefore, the limitation takes place at the inverter, not at the solar panels themselves.

Why capping an inverter can be smart

Capping your inverter can be a smart idea. For example, a smaller inverter tends to be more active on days with less sunlight. That’s because it turns on earlier during morning or evening sunlight and stays active later than a heavier model. Thus, you utilize more hours of energy output. In addition, you reduce the risk of grid congestion by limiting the peak capacity of the inverter. This is especially relevant with limited grid infrastructure, but also applies to households with dynamic energy contracts. After all, less feed-in means lower return costs. Finally, a smaller inverter is usually cheaper. In addition, you avoid the need for a heavier grid connection, which saves installation costs. Viewed over an entire year, this outweighs the modest yield you miss on peak days.

How do you decide the right ratio when capping solar panels?

When installing solar panels, look at the Wp capacity of the panels and the AC capacity of the inverter. In the Netherlands, an inverter with 10-30% less power than the panel power is often chosen. For example: with 4 200 Wp panels, a 3 600 W inverter is common. You top off a maximum of 600 Wp at sunny times. This has several advantages. For example, the inverter may start earlier in the morning and shut down later. In addition, there is less downtime on gray days, thanks to higher efficiency at low power levels. Also, you have a smaller chance of feed-in when you run out of space for storage or direct consumption yourself.

Seasonal effects on capping your inverter

In spring, when the air is clear and the temperature is still low, solar panels perform quite optimally. So your solar panels produce the most energy in the spring. This is precisely when the inverter peaks. This is often evidenced by flat tops in your yield graph. This is a sign that the inverter is reaching its maximum capacity. This is not a problem, however, because the extra yield you realize in the morning and evening hours weighs more heavily in the annual score. You even lose a little at peak times, but this is more than compensated by extra yield at other times.

7 helpful tips for capping your solar panel system

We have collected a few more tips for you. That way you can get started efficiently with (having) capping your inverter.

Calculate ratios: it is smart to calculate the ideal ratio of panel power to inverter. Keep in mind ± 20% difference.

Recognize flat tops: you can check these through your yield chart and they are a sign of capping. Do not see this as disturbing, but as normality.

Choose the right inverter: pay attention to inverter specifications about efficiency at low load. For example, that it turns off when it falls below 8% power.

Choose the right dynamic limiting: if your inverter supports dynamic limiting, make sure you choose the right one. This way, grid load is variably controlled.

Keep an eye on the grid connection: lower capacity prevents additional costs for grid reinforcement.

Assess feed-in charges with your energy supplier: in fact, less peak supply means less charges.

Schedule maintenance and monitoring: trends in yield graphs help you determine if the system is still functioning optimally.

Capping your solar panels is therefore not a bad choice, but rather a smart one. By deliberately choosing an inverter with slightly less capacity than your panel power, you will benefit from several advantages. For example, you will have more yield on cloudy days by starting earlier and stopping later. You also have less peak load on peak days, reducing grid charges for feed-in tariffs. And you have the opportunity to save on inverter and grid costs. On your annual report, you will find that a system that taps occasionally ends up producing more than one that runs right on peak all day, especially in the Netherlands.

Hopefully you now have a clear answer to the question “what is capping solar panels? In any case, make sure the design, choices and your monitoring are done professionally. That way you will maximize the benefits. Also feel free to get good advice and contact an installer or energy consultant. In this way you can avoid wasting energy on sunny days and reap the benefits of days with less sun. Isn’t that what everyone wants?

When we look at the sky, for us the sun is nothing more than a shining orb that gives us daylight and warmth. But for more and more people, this giant star is also the solution for a more sustainable future. Solar panels have therefore become a popular way to harness the power of the sun. Nevertheless, for optimal use of the solar panels, it is important to know the correct inclination angle. Therefore, read on to find out how the ideal inclination angle of solar panels is determined. In addition, we would like to tell you more about why solar panels are a smart choice for the future.

Why the ideal pitch angle for solar panels is important

The angle at which solar panels are placed directly affects the amount of sunlight they can capture. The goal is to position the panel to capture as much direct sunlight as possible during the day. To determine the inclination angle of solar panels, the sun’s altitude and latitude are important. The solar altitude is the angle of the sun relative to the horizon at noon. And the latitude is the distance in degrees north or south of the equator.

Calculating the ideal angle for solar panels

The rule of thumb for determining the optimal angle of inclination for solar panels is quite simple. Namely, the angle should be approximately equal to the latitude of the location. For example, if you live in Amsterdam (about 52° northern latitude), the ideal inclination angle would be around 52°. However, for optimal performance during different seasons, adjustments may be necessary. In winter, add 15° to the latitude and for summer, subtract 15° from the latitude. For spring and fall, use the exact latitude. The direction of the solar panels can also have an effect on how much energy they generate. For example, there is a difference between the output of solar panels facing west versus north.

The ideal angle for south-facing solar panels

The ideal tilt angle for solar panels facing south is about 35 degrees. This ensures an optimal balance between summer and winter yields. At this angle, the solar panels capture the maximum amount of sunlight throughout the year.

The ideal angle for solar panels on a flat roof

For solar panels on a flat roof, the ideal angle depends on the orientation. If the panels face south, an angle of 30-35 degrees is most optimal. However, if the panels are placed facing east or west, an angle of 10-13 degrees produces the highest yield. This is because a lower angle prevents the panels from overshadowing each other and provides more efficient energy output during the day. In addition, solar panels on a flat roof are often placed in an east-west arrangement to distribute energy production more evenly throughout the day.

The benefits of optimal pitch solar panels

The ideal slope angle for solar panels can provide many benefits. Whether it is a standard roof or you want to put the solar panels on a thatched roof. In any case, we have listed the biggest advantages for you:

Maximizes energy generation: by optimally orienting the panel toward the sun, the amount of energy produced increases.

Extends the life of the panel: by maintaining an optimal angle, overheating is reduced, extending the life of the panel. This is partly because the correct angle promotes air circulation behind the panel.

Minimizes reflection: solar panels work best when they can absorb as much sunlight as possible. Choosing the ideal inclination angle for solar panels minimizes the reflection of sunlight. This means more light is absorbed directly by the panel, which increases efficiency.

Improves aesthetics: a solar panel placed at the correct angle can integrate seamlessly with the roof of a house or building. This not only improves functional performance, but also contributes to a more attractive visual appearance. Sometimes it is even possible to use solar panels as roofing materials!

Reduces maintenance: in areas where it rains or snows regularly, the proper slope angle can help with natural cleaning of the panel. Rain can wash away dust and dirt. In the process, the right angle can minimize snow accumulation in winter.

More efficient energy storage: the right slope angle for solar panels means they deliver energy more consistently throughout the day. This provides a more stable energy supply to batteries and energy storage systems, allowing these systems to operate more efficiently.

Optimization of space: placing solar panels at the right angle allows them to capture the most sunlight in the smallest area possible. This is especially beneficial for homes and buildings with limited roof space.
So choosing the right angle of inclination for solar panels is crucial to maximizing efficiency. With simple rules of thumb and adjustments for the changing seasons, homeowners can get the most out of their solar investment. Either way, it’s clear that solar panels are important for a more sustainable future. Good luck!

In recent years, solar energy has become increasingly popular and has become one of the most widely used renewable energy sources. The net-metering scheme, which was introduced to stimulate solar energy, has had a great influence on this. Nevertheless, things are going to change within this scheme in the coming years. For now, the net-metering scheme has been extended, but what exactly does this mean? In this blog we will tell you exactly what will change, why the energy saving scheme has been postponed and what the consequences are.

What was the original design of the balancing scheme?

In the original bill, the government planned to phase out the energy-saving scheme starting in 2023. After this, a new bill was introduced, under which the energy-saving scheme would be extended until 2025. After 2025, the energy-saving scheme would be slowly phased out until 2031, after which the scheme would be completely abolished. The bill had already been approved by the House of Representatives, but the Senate had yet to vote on it. The net-metering scheme allows you to deliver the electricity you generate with the solar panels, but do not use directly, back to the electricity grid. The part supplied back is offset against your own energy consumption. Curious about what solar panels can give you and how many can fit on your roof? Read it here!

What is changing about the balancing scheme?

The Senate has disapproved the bill to phase out the net-metering scheme, leaving the scheme in place for now. However, as of Jan. 1, 2027, the scheme will disappear completely. From then on, you will no longer be able to net generated electricity, but will receive a feed-in compensation. Are you considering solar panels? Then it would be wise not to wait too long to take full advantage of the current scheme. Request a consultation today and one of our sustainability advisors will be happy to help you.

Why has the balancing scheme been delayed?

The new bill has been vetoed, delaying the energy-saving scheme. Many are wondering: why did the Senate reject the bill and extend the net-metering scheme indefinitely? The Senate believes that buying solar panels will become less attractive if the energy-saving scheme is completely abolished. However, sustainability should be encouraged and people who buy solar panels should be rewarded. According to the Senate, phasing out and eventually completely abolishing the energy-saving scheme is not the right solution. For this reason, they have rejected the bill, which means that a new bill must now be drafted. Until then, the balancing scheme has been extended indefinitely.

What are the implications of the deferred net-metering scheme?

For people with solar panels on their roofs, there are a number of positive consequences. For example, they can benefit from the rendition for longer now that the balancing scheme has been postponed. Even if you do not yet have solar panels, now is still the right time to purchase them. The payback period remains relatively short, so they will soon be profitable. How things will proceed with the net-metering scheme, however, is still a question. Even if the energy-saving scheme does eventually get phased out and abolished, the investment will still pay off.

What do the proponents of the net-metering scheme say?

According to proponents, the scheme is important for individuals and small businesses. The net-metering scheme encourages investment in solar energy especially among this target group. The quick payback period plays a major role in the decision to go ahead with the investment. In recent years, the use of renewable energy has grown enormously with the help of the net-metering scheme. Phasing out and eventually abolishing the scheme may slow this growth, which is detrimental to achieving sustainability goals. In addition, abruptly ending or rapidly phasing out the scheme may cause individuals and businesses to rely less on the government. As long as the future of the scheme is uncertain, there will continue to be unrest and distrust, which will stall the growth of renewable energy.

What do the opponents of the energy-saving scheme say?

The net-metering scheme would be too great a financial burden for the government. The purpose of the scheme, to encourage the purchase of solar panels, has already been achieved, according to opponents. Solar panels have become increasingly efficient and even cheaper in recent years, making them an interesting investment even without the subsidy. In fact, without the net-metering scheme, solar panels pay for themselves within 7 years on average. It also affects taxpayers in the country. This is because no tax has to be paid on the money recovered through the balancing scheme. According to opponents, it is time that sustainability and the purchase of solar panels should be stimulated in a different way.

Hopefully, after reading this blog, you will have a better understanding of the balancing scheme and what exactly is going to change. We will have to wait for the new bill in the near future, but until then, you can enjoy the benefits of the deferred balancing scheme without any worries.

Recently, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen adopted new regulations related to the installation of solar panels on national monuments and monumental buildings. These regulations aim to balance the promotion of renewable energy with the preservation of cultural heritage. This will make it possible for many people and businesses located in monumental buildings to participate in the energy transition. This will promote sustainability. You can read about what will change in this blog.

Guidelines based on national rules for solar panels on monuments

The City of Sittard-Geleen and other municipalities have established guidelines that are in line with national rules for installing solar panels on monumental properties. These rules are designed to ensure that solar installations disturb the historic character of buildings as little as possible. For example, attention is paid to the positioning of solar panels, with preference given to placements that are not directly visible from public roads. In addition, consideration is given to the color and design of the panels to minimize visual impact. How many solar panels fit on the roof then obviously depends on the above factors, among others.

The new rules for solar panels on listed buildings

The new rules governing the installation of solar panels on national monuments and listed buildings, as mentioned above, aim to strike a balance between preserving cultural heritage and encouraging renewable energy generation. Here are some of the specific guidelines adopted:

Integration with the property

The solar installations must be placed in such a way that they cause as little disruption as possible to the listed building. This means taking into account the appearance of the building. In addition, the panels should be arranged and tuned (for example, in terms of color) so that they are less conspicuous.

Permits

In most cases, an environmental permit is required to install solar panels on monuments and in protected city or villagescapes. However, there are exceptions where a permit is not required, such as for placement on the rear roof deck that is not visible from the public road.

Eased advisory policy RCE

The National Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) has relaxed its advisory policy. Whether or not solar panels are visible from publicly accessible areas is no longer a decisive criterion. This means that they no longer necessarily have to be in the shade, if that would be the non-visible side. More important is the extent to which the monument’s appearance may be disturbed. Carefully considered designs that do not cause disproportionate visual disturbance can be viewed positively.

Conditions for new rules on solar panels on national monuments

However, there are also specific situations and preconditions that require extra attention. For example, plans for installing solar panels must take into account the historical value and appearance of the monument. In addition, no cultural-historical greenery may be cut down for the installation. Also, solar panels are expected to match the roofing as much as possible in color to blend into the historic image. This new policy is an important step toward making the Netherlands more sustainable, with the ambition of being energy-neutral by 2050. Allowing solar panels on monuments increases the contribution to clean energy generation and energy conservation within this type of building. A whole new target group is now eligible for sustainability measures, which is of course very beneficial. Do you have a listed building that you would like to put solar panels on? If so, always engage a professional company to help you. Good luck!

More and more households have already opted for solar panels. This is not only good for sustainability, but also certainly for energy costs. Still, it is difficult to properly determine in advance how many solar panels you are going to need. After all, your energy needs change over the years due to various factors. From family expansion, to the purchase of an air conditioner or heat pump, for example, it’s all possible. Expanding or adding solar panels may then be necessary. But how exactly does this work? We explain it all to you in this blog.

Extending or adding solar panels: what’s the difference?

So when you need more solar panels, there are two options: expand solar panels or add on. The options seem similar, but there is quite a difference. We are happy to explain what this difference is, so you can better know what the right choice is for your situation.

Expanding solar panels

When you choose to expand solar panels, you choose to add a few separate panels to your current system. This involves placing them on the same inverter and then operating as one solar panel system. Expanding your current system is often the most cost-effective option if your inverter can handle the extra capacity and there is enough space on the roof. However, the added panels may affect the performance of your entire system if they cannot be placed optimally.

Adding solar panels

When you add solar panels, the solar panels are installed as a new system. The solar panels can then still be placed next to the current system, but can also be placed in a different location. Think garage or shed, or another part of the roof. This is often done when there is not enough space on the roof, for example. Adding a new system is more expensive because it requires an additional inverter. Nevertheless, this does offer the advantage that both systems operate independently of each other. This means that the new system does not affect the performance of the old system and vice versa. Siding can be especially advantageous if the new panels will be on a different part of the roof or in a different location.

What to consider before expanding or adding to your solar panels?

Before you choose to expand or add to your solar panels, there are a things to consider:

Your current system and inverter: the decision between expanding or adding solar panels is closely related to your current solar panel system. In particular, this involves the inverter. It must be able to handle the increased power. In some cases, you can connect additional panels to your current inverter, but often an upgrade or a new system is needed to maximize efficiency.

Roof space and positioning: not every roof can support the weight of additional solar panels. In addition, available space or roof positioning can have an impact. Sometimes expanding solar panels simply cannot be done because not as many solar panels will fit on your roof. Then you will have to choose to add a new system on another part of the roof or another location, such as a shed.

Series connected panels: with series connected panels, the panel with the lowest yield affects the overall performance of the system. Expansion can then be difficult, especially if the new panels are placed in a less than ideal position. For example, there is a difference between the yield of solar panels facing west or other directions. Expanding can then lower the overall yield, making solar panel expansion of little use.

Cost: The cost of expanding or adding solar panels varies widely. It all depends on the type of solar panel you choose and whether a new inverter is needed.

Warranty and installers: it’s smart to have expansions or new installations done by the same company that installed your current system. Or at least by a professional company you can trust. This can avoid potential problems with warranty claims and assures that you are dealing with installers who are familiar with your system.

Energy schemes and subsidies: consider local regulations, subsidies and energy schemes that may affect your decision. The Small Business Enterprise Allowance (KOR), for example, can affect VAT refunds when you expand your system.

As you can read, there is plenty to consider before making the choice to expand or add to your solar panels. The most important thing is that it fits your situation. Read here, for example, how many solar panels you need if you have purchased an electric car. Whatever you choose, (additional) solar panels are always a good option by which you contribute to a more sustainable world. Good luck choosing!

Combining the luxury of a Jacuzzi with renewable energy is a dream for many. But is it feasible? In this blog you will read all about buying and using a solar jacuzzi. Indeed, with the emergence of renewable energy solutions, such as solar panels, it is now possible to relax without guilt. We discuss the possibilities of a solar-powered jacuzzi, how to install it and what the general benefits and challenges are.

What does a solar hot tub mean?

A solar-powered jacuzzi is basically a normal jacuzzi that gets its energy from solar energy, rather than from the traditional grid. This is because solar panels convert sunlight into electricity. This electricity is then used to heat and operate the Jacuzzi. The technology behind it is actually quite simple, yet advanced. Namely, solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC). An inverter then converts this direct current into alternating current (AC), the form of electricity needed for your Jacuzzi. You can place solar panels on your roof, or use them as roofing.

Installing solar panels for your jacuzzi

When installing solar panels for your jacuzzi, it is important to choose the right type and quantity of panels. The energy requirements of your Jacuzzi play an important role here. A professional can help you calculate how much solar energy is needed to run your it efficiently. The installation of the solar panels should then be done carefully and strategically. It is very important to place the panels in a place where they will receive as much sunlight as possible. After all, what is the yield of your solar panels facing west, for example? Finally, the connection between the solar panels and the jacuzzi must be done professionally and safely to ensure efficiency and safety.

A Jacuzzi on solar panels: the benefits

Using solar panels for your Jacuzzi has several benefits. You save on energy costs, help the environment and become less dependent on the power grid. Below we explain these benefits in more detail.

1. Environmental friendliness

A solar-powered Jacuzzi is a sustainable choice. By using solar energy, you reduce your carbon emissions. This means you use less fossil fuels, which is good for the environment. In addition, you are contributing to a greener future without sacrificing comfort.

Discover eco-friendly solar panels

2. Long-term cost savings

Purchasing solar panels for your Jacuzzi is an investment. But in the long run, you will save money. After all, solar energy is free. This means that you need less power from the grid, thus lowering your energy bill. The longer you use the solar panels, the more you save.

3. Less reliance on the power grid

With a solar panel for your Jacuzzi, you become less dependent on the power grid. This is especially useful during power outages or peak times when energy costs are high. With your own solar energy, your Jacuzzi will continue to work as usual. This way, you will always enjoy a warm bath, without worrying about high energy bills.

Challenges and considerations with a solar hot tub

The effectiveness of your solar panels depends greatly on your geographic location and local climate. In areas with less sunlight, additional panels or an alternative energy source may be needed to provide adequate power to your Jacuzzi. In addition, solar panels for your jacuzzi require maintenance to keep functioning optimally. In this regard, it is important to invest in quality solar panels that are long-lasting and weather-resistant. Another consideration is that depending on where you live, there may also be specific laws and regulations regarding the installation of solar panels. So it is important to make sure you find out about this and apply for the appropriate permits if necessary.

In a nutshell, a solar-powered Jacuzzi is a great way to combine luxury and sustainability. Not only does it offer an environmentally friendly solution for relaxation, but it also provides long-term financial benefits. When considering a solar panel for your Jacuzzi, it is important to consider certain issues. But while there are some challenges, switching to solar panels for your Jacuzzi is an investment worth making, both for your wallet and for the planet.

When we think of sustainability, one of the first things that comes to mind is often putting solar panels on the roof. With a standard pitched or flat roof, this is usually not a problem. But what if you have a thatched roof? It is not strange that you may have doubts about whether solar panels can be laid on a thatched roof. You can read in this blog whether it is possible and how it works.

Solar panels and a thatched roof: a good combination?

Although thatched roofs are beautiful, they can present some challenges. Hence, at first it was always said that installing solar panels on a thatched roof was not possible. Over the years it was done, but was still not advisable. The reason was that mounting the panels could damage or puncture the thatch, resulting in leaks. Moreover, the thatched roof was not always stable and secure enough to support the panels. Nevertheless, there have been quite a few advances in solar panel technology in recent years. For example, special installation methods and materials are now available that make it possible to install solar panels on a thatched roof. So it can be done now, but there are some important points to consider.

Considerations when installing solar panels on a thatched roof

The right installation method

When installing solar panels on a thatched roof, it is a smart choice to hire a solar panel specialist. They have the right knowledge and experience to install the solar panels safely and without damaging the thatch. The panels are generally attached to the roof structure to minimize the load on the thatch itself.

Maintenance

Thatched roofs require more maintenance than the average roofing material. So keep this in mind when installing solar panels. These can complicate the maintenance of the thatch. In addition, the solar panels themselves also need regular maintenance to maintain their efficiency. So it is important to find a good balance.

Safety

Installing solar panels on a thatched roof can create additional fire risk. This is due to the potential heat generation of the solar panels and the flammability of the thatch. Proper installation by professionals can minimize this risk, but it is an important aspect to consider.

Tips for installing solar panels on a thatched roof

If you are considering having solar panels installed on your thatched roof, here are some tips to consider:

Do research on the right solar panels: there are solar panels that are better suited for installation on a thatched roof than others. Do your homework and choose the right panels. Often a solar panel specialist can help you with this.

Insure your roof: after installing solar panels, you may need to update your insurance. Check with your insurance company and make sure you are adequately insured.

Consider the placement of the solar panels: to get as much return as possible from your solar panels, it is important to consider where you place them. For example, there is a difference between what solar panels facing west yield versus solar panels facing south.

So it is possible to install solar panels on a thatched roof. In doing so, be sure to check how many solar panels will fit on your roof and how many you need.

Nowadays, there is no need to explain that solar panels are a sustainable investment. After all, you not only save on energy costs, but you also help the climate a bit. A win-win situation, in other words. Almost every roof is suitable for solar panels, but what it yields varies a lot. In this blog we look at what the yield is from solar panels facing west. So read on quickly!

Why are solar panels on west-facing roofs interesting?

It is always said that placing solar panels facing south is the best choice and that solar panels in the shade yield little. Yet the answer is not so black and white. In fact, placing solar panels on the west-facing roof is quite interesting. For example, south-facing solar panels pull in their maximum output around the middle of the day. However, the demand for electricity is often lower at this time than, say, in the evening. With west-facing solar panels, on the other hand, most production comes in at the end of the day. And let that be precisely the time when people come home and start using the electricity.

The yield of west-facing solar panels

What the yield of west-facing solar panels is depends on several factors. Among them is the angle of inclination. For west-facing solar panels, it is best to choose an angle of inclination between 10 and 30 degrees. Roofs are often more sloped than this, but the slope can usually be corrected during and through installation. In addition, the efficiency of west-facing solar panels can be improved by adding optimizers. These ensure that the solar panels will independently get the maximum power from each solar panel. This is very useful if, for example, a few solar panels are already in the shade, but the rest are still catching sun. Also, the yield of solar panels on the west depends on the type of solar panels you choose. Therefore, always get good advice before choosing where to have the solar panels installed.

Solar panels facing west compared to other directions

Let’s start by saying that the payback for solar panels, even on the west, is always good. In fact, solar panels last longer than the length of time it takes to pay back. However, how long it takes you to recoup your solar panels does vary by direction. The north, for example, yields the least because the sun shines on it the least amount of time. As indicated, the south yields the most production because the sun shines on it during the hottest part of the day. However, should you choose to install solar panels on both sides of the roof, the west-east combination is better than south-north. This is because the yield of solar panels on the west and east is fine. This is because sun shines on them both in the morning (east) and in the evening (west). Together, that yields more than the high production of south and the minimal production of north.

The efficiency of west-facing solar panels

The efficiency of west-facing solar panels is better than you probably think. For example, the efficiency loss is often less than expected. This is due to the reasons mentioned above such as the number of hours of sunshine, the time of day when the energy is generated and the angle of inclination. Added to that is the fact that solar panels have continued to decrease in cost over the years and a solar panel yields more. And since Jan. 1, 2023, you no longer even pay VAT on solar panels.

Advice on solar panels on west facing professionals

Solar panels facing west can be a good investment. To ensure you get the most out of your investment, it is always best to contact a professional installation company such as The Sustainable Boys. With years of experience installing solar panels, we can tell you everything you need to know about the best solutions for your home.
Annoying, isn’t it? Have you just had solar panels on the roof for a few months and already there is work to be done on the roof. Or you are moving and want to take the panels with you to your new home. Are you familiar with that? Fortunately, removing solar panels and replacing them is often easier than you think. So read this blog, because we would like to explain to you what it costs to remove and replace solar panels and what the warranty is.

Why remove and replace solar panels?

There are many reasons why you might need to remove and replace you w solar panels. Most often, it is because of work on your roof. You may be building a dormer, need to do paint work on the house or prefer your solar panels as roofing, but there could be other reasons as well. For example, the party that installed the solar panels may not have provided a good service so you are no longer satisfied or you may want different solar panels for better efficiency.

Quality solar panels still have 85% efficiency after 25 years, which means they last about 30 to 40 years on average. In addition, inverters have a lifespan of 10 to 25 years. When purchasing, it is advisable to take a critical look at the lifespan: that way, you can avoid early removal of solar panels. For this reason, the Sustainable Boys always schedule extensive consultations to ensure that the customer makes informed decisions.

Removing and replacing solar panels: these are the costs

Now you are probably wondering what solar panel removal and installation will cost you. That depends on a number of factors. For example, it is important to know how many solar panels are involved and whether the entire installation has to be removed, or whether it is just the panels themselves. It is also important to know how long it will take before the solar panels can be replaced, because extra time will have to be scheduled for this.

The cost of temporary solar panel removal

Temporarily removing solar panels involves costs, which is logical. The exact costs are difficult to determine in advance because the situation is different at every address. For example, the neighbor may have lower costs than you, because you have more solar panels or a different installation. It is therefore best to request a quote from a certified solar panel installer. Preferably, of course, with the company that also installed the solar panels in the first place. If for some reason this is not possible, make sure you go for a reliable new party. Then you can be sure that the removal and replacement of your solar panels will not have to be done more than once because something goes wrong. Of course, that would be a waste of your money.

Installation warranty: leave solar panel removal and reinstallation to professionals

If you are handy yourself or have friends who are handy, you may be considering removing and putting back the solar panels yourself. However, this is not immediately the best plan, regardless of whether it is a tile or thatched roof. This is because when the solar panels are installed by professionals, you have a warranty on both the products and the installation. If you are going to remove and replace the solar panels yourself, the professionals will not know if it is done the right way. Therefore, it is always smart to hire a licensed solar panel installer. Then you can be sure that it will go off without a hitch (get it?).

Removing and replacing solar panels in a few steps

Disassembling solar panels yourself

Despite not being the easiest task to perform, it is still possible to disassemble solar panels yourself. However, you need some basic technical skills to do this. It is also extremely important to take proper precautions. When in doubt, it is always wise to hire a professional. The process of removing solar panels is as follows:

Turn off the power and make sure no light is exposed to the panels.

Disconnect the connectors using an MC4 tool.

Carefully remove the panels from the roof.

Work accurately and carefully to avoid corrosion and water contact.

Finally, it is important to protect the roof by placing rubber tiles under the feet of the frame.

Does not only your roof need maintenance, but also your solar panels?
