FACT!

The Netherlands is known for its cheese, tulips and bicycles. But there is another reason to be proud of our little froggy country: we are world champions when it comes to the number of solar panels per capita. Despite the often rainy weather, the Dutch have invested massively in solar energy. In doing so, we have not only lowered our energy bills, but also set in motion a greener future.

In 2023, 4.8 gigawatts of power were added. As a result, the Netherlands now has a capacity of 24.4 gigawatts. That is 1,386 watts or 3.5 solar panels per inhabitant. This is according to the National Solar Trend Report 2024 from Dutch New Energy Research (DNE Research). With this average, the Netherlands has passed Australia in the world rankings.

That the Netherlands is the world leader in solar panels is remarkable, to say the least. Our weather is not exactly known for its abundance of sunny days. Yet we have amazed everyone with our commitment to clean energy. Having the highest number of solar panels per capita is a fine achievement, and one that deserves credit for all the Dutch people who have decided to make their homes more sustainable.

It is actually quite remarkable that despite our rainy image, we are at the forefront of solar energy. Choosing solar panels is not only a sign of individual commitment to the environment, but also of a collective commitment to a more sustainable future. At a time when climate change and environmental awareness are hot topics, the Netherlands is setting an example for the rest of the world.

‘Sustainability is not a buzzword, but desperately needed for our planet and the generations to come.’

By investing in solar energy, we are helping to reduce our carbon footprint and protect the environment. It is a step in the right direction and a signal that we as a society are serious about finding solutions to global environmental problems.

In addition, it is encouraging to see that the transition to renewable energy sources is driven not only by government initiatives, but also by individual choices. Every Dutch person who decides to install solar panels is contributing to the transition to a cleaner and greener society.

So, a heartfelt thumbs up to every Dutch person who goes green and gives the energy bill a big “kick in the windmill. Keep up this positive mindset so we can work together to create a more sustainable future for all of us!
