Our first smart home living project is a reality! As neighborhood sustainability professionals, we were no strangers to FWD Magazine’s editor-in-chief Martijn Chel. From the moment he started building his own self-sufficient home, he was eager to partner with us. Below is a brief preview of how this collaboration went.

“Of course, a smart house cannot do without solar panels with which we can be virtually self-sufficient. We therefore already took into account the location and sufficient space on the roof in the initial drawings. Together with The Sustainable Boys we then started looking for the best solution for as much solar energy as possible as well as a solution for energy management in the house. We finally chose 30 black panels from Canadian Solar, with a capacity of 365wp each. With a total of 30 panels we should be able to generate over 10,000kWh, which should be enough to make the house self-sufficient (at least during the months with lots of sunlight).”

In the near future, solar panels and smart home living are going to be an essential collaboration. Especially now that the net-metering scheme is being phased out, this is critical to being self-sufficient.
