Solar panels can freeze. Fact or fable?

FACT!

A cold, sunny winter day, who doesn’t love it? Your solar panels are fans of it, too. They absorb sunlight and convert it into renewable energy, even on the coldest days of the year.

But what about hail, frost and snow? Don’t worry, your solar panels are stronger than you think! Solar panels are built tough and can withstand the vagaries of winter without a problem. They are resistant to freezing and icing, so they remain reliable no matter how cold it gets outside.

Solar panels in winter

It’s a common question: can solar panels freeze? The answer is no. Solar panels are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions. They contain anti-reflective coatings and are made of robust materials. So, when winter makes its icy grip felt, solar panels remain steadfast in doing their job.

Although the sun may not shine as intensely in winter as it does in summer, this does not mean that solar panels produce nothing. Even on cloudy days and with low sun, solar panels produce power. The system runs on sunlight, not its heat. This light is converted into energy. So even on less sunny days, solar panels simply do their job.

In fact, they can be more efficient at colder temperatures. A lower ambient temperature can improve the conductivity of electricity, allowing the panels to generate energy more effectively.

Solar panels are profitable all year round

Solar panels are also profitable in the fall and winter. There is just less light and the sun is slightly lower. The total generation in the winter months is therefore lower than in spring and summer. About 70% of the annual yield is generated between April and September, the remaining 30% between October and March.

Solar panels and snow

What happens when there is a pack of snow on your solar panels? Contrary to what some people think, snow can actually have a cleansing effect. It reflects sunlight and can help the panels absorb more solar energy. So snow removal is not necessary. In addition, solar panels have a slight slope, so melting snow slides off easily.

In short, solar panels can easily withstand the winter cold. If you are wondering if installing solar panels in the winter is a wise choice, the answer is a resounding yes!

The myth that solar panels freeze and become inactive in winter is nothing more than a cold fable. The entire system can withstand frost, continue to produce green power and can even appreciate a winter polish of snow.
