At the moment it is still possible to balance 100% until 2024. This means that the power generated by solar panels is offset 1-to-1 with the power consumed. In 2025 and 2026 this is only 64%. After that, the scheme will be phased out by 9% per year until 2030. From 2031 it will no longer be possible to net your own generated electricity. However, you will still be able to supply excess power back to the grid for a feed-in tariff.
Will solar panels remain interesting?
Even after the phasing out of the net-metering scheme, solar panels remain interesting. For the electricity you are no longer allowed to balance, you will receive a feed-in compensation instead of it being deducted from your energy bill. This change only affects the energy you actually pay for through your energy supplier and not the energy you consume directly yourself.
Thus, after the abolition of the balancing scheme, it becomes especially important to consume the self-generated energy yourself at the times when you generate your own energy. For example, charge your electric car or battery in the afternoon instead of in the evening. This way you do not balance your power, but use the self-generated power behind the meter.
What does the big winner of the election (BBB) want with solar energy?
‘There will be no solar panels on farmland as long as there are empty roofs and land. The Building Code should state that roofs are suitable for the installation of solar panels. We believe that solar panels should only be placed on rooftops and that this should be taken into account in advance in new construction and renovation of both private and commercial property. Buying up fertile land by external investors for the purpose of installing solar panels is a thing of the past,” the party concludes.
The BBB also believes that because of this, the balancing scheme should remain. ‘War will never be waged on solar. No one will invade the sun and threaten to turn off the solar tap. Nor will we exhaust the sun. Sun is next to wind: geo-politically free energy to which everyone should and can have access. Purchase of solar panels on roofs of households we must therefore continue to encourage and blockages must be removed. The problem is not people with solar panels. The problem is people without solar panels who have no access to this self-generated energy,’ the BBB quotes.
