All about preserving the net-metering scheme

Share this blog:

We have all been working hard for years to make our homes more sustainable. Examples include insulation, double glazing and solar panels. Solar panels in particular are an investment, but one that will eventually pay for itself. And how? Thanks to the net-metering scheme. For years, this scheme has been an attractive benefit for households with solar panels. However, there is talk of abolishing this scheme. We would like to tell you in this blog exactly what the situation is and why it is important to maintain the system.

What exactly does the balancing scheme entail?

The salderingsregeling is a scheme in the Netherlands for owners of solar panels. It allows households and small businesses to offset the self-generated electricity they supply back to the electricity grid against their own consumption. This means that if you generate more power than you use at that time, you can “net off” the excess with the power you use at a later time. As a result, you pay less or even no energy tax on the portion you feed back. Let’s explain it with an example: if you deliver 1,500 kWh of power back to the grid in the summer, you can use 1,500 kWh of power in the winter without being charged for it. This arrangement makes solar panels extra attractive because it significantly reduces the payback period.

The new situation of the balancing scheme

It was announced during Budget Day that the net-metering scheme will end on January 1, 2027. This means that solar panel owners will receive less compensation for the electricity they feed back into the grid until the scheme eventually disappears. For households with solar panels, it is important to prepare for this and to start thinking now about ways to continue to make optimal use of the power generated.

Why stop the balancing scheme?

The government sees the phasing out of the balancing scheme as a step toward a more sustainable energy system, in which households are encouraged to use self-generated energy directly instead of feeding it back to the grid. This reduces the pressure on the electricity grid and encourages investments in home batteries and air conditioners on solar panels, for example, which will enable home energy storage.

What does this mean for you?

Although the net-metering scheme ends from 2027, solar panels still remain a worthwhile investment. The falling cost of solar panels still makes it attractive for many households to invest in solar energy, especially if you smartly adjust your consumption to the power generated. In addition, the phasing out of the scheme until 2027 still allows you to take advantage of the benefits, albeit to a lesser extent.

Tips to prepare for the end of the balancing scheme

  • Increase your own consumption: by using more of your generated power directly yourself, for example by running appliances such as washing machines or dishwashers during the day, you make the best use of your solar panels. This not only helps lower your energy bill, but also helps prevent overloading the grid.
  • Stay abreast of new developments: regulations around energy are constantly changing. By staying well informed about future measures, you can adjust your energy use and continue to benefit from sustainable solutions.

Although the maintenance of the net-metering scheme is coming to an end, installing solar panels is still a smart choice. By being smart about your generated power now, you can continue to contribute to a sustainable future and benefit from lower energy costs. Good luck!
